September Food Events: A Busy Month for Ocean Wise – and Foodies!
August 24th, 2012
The Vancouver Aquarium Ocean Wise team has had a busy year so far, and September is no exception – it is a month full of food events from coast to coast that focus on conscientious eating. Ocean Wise will be at many of these events to share information with the public about ways to purchase and consume ocean-friendly seafood. There will be events on both the eastern and western sides of the country, so we welcome you to come out and visit us! For events requiring tickets, you can click on the links below.
The month kicks off at The Feast of Fields in Nobleton, Ontario and Maple Ridge, B.C. on September 9. This event, started by Chefs Jamie Kennedy and Michael Statlander, is an outdoor celebration of local and organic food. We’ll also be making the trek to the Canadian Chef’s Congress in Grand Pré Nova Scotia on September 16 – 18 to lead workshops with 500 chefs from across the country. The workshops will focus on ways that chefs can choose seafood that supports the long-term health of our oceans. And the beautiful vistas of the Bay of Fundy will only improve the ambience as all of the congress delegates camp in a field and enjoy all things food – including a Pig Roast and Fish Fry. Both events reinforce the importance of connecting to the land that sustains us and eating consciously.
British Columbia also boasts two events in September that will feature amazing food and local wine, while also reinforcing the message of conscious eating by benefitting Ocean Wise.
On September 8 starting at 5:30 p.m., Manitou Beach in Naramata Village will be full of wine enthusiasts, sampling the vintages of 21 Okanagan wineries during the Naramata Bench Wineries Tailgate Party. Live music, dancing and a Salmon Showdown judged by food celebrities will make this Tailgate party the Okanagan Wine event of the year.
Then on September 20, Chef Meets BC Grape comes to Vancouver, and is the largest annual celebration of B.C. wines and local food. Approximately 75 B.C. wineries will be sharing their new fall releases, which will be paired with inspired dishes from top restaurants in the province.
When it comes to seafood, remember to always consult our Ocean Wise website, iPhone app, or shop at an Ocean Wise partner location to purchase sustainable options. This September, we hope you can join us in one of these celebrations of conscious eating, and enjoy some delicious local food and wine along the way.
